GambleAware Week at SS&A – Raising Awareness About Responsible Gambling

This week, we were proud to host the team from GambleAware Murrumbidgee as part of GambleAware Week, a national initiative aimed at promoting safe and responsible gambling. The event brought together staff for an engaging discussion on how to ensure patrons are gaming responsibly, particularly when it comes to pokies.

Kade, one of the presenters from GambleAware, spoke candidly about the importance of understanding the impact of gambling.

“It’s not about stopping people from enjoying a night out or a few spins on the pokies,” Kade explained. “It’s about recognising the signs, setting limits, and keeping gambling fun — not stressful.”

Advocating Responsible Gambling

A key focus of the session was educating staff on helping players understand why certain gaming experiences, like chasing a near miss, can make it tempting to continue playing. As Kade pointed out,

“That feeling of almost winning can trick our brains into thinking a win is just around the corner. Being aware of it helps people make smarter choices about how and when to play.”

Claire, another GambleAware presenter, added a personal perspective on supporting the community:

“Responsible gaming isn’t about taking the fun away — it’s about giving people the tools to enjoy it safely. Recognising patterns and setting limits can make all the difference.”

The session also highlighted practical strategies for players, including setting personal limits, taking breaks, and understanding how pokies are designed to entertain, rather than guarantee wins.

SS&A’s Dedication to Promoting Responsible Gambling

The SS&A is committed to supporting responsible gambling initiatives like GambleAware Week, reinforcing the venue’s role as a place where members can enjoy their favourite games safely and with awareness.

By bringing these conversations to the community, the team hopes to encourage positive gaming habits and foster a safe environment for everyone.

Through its collaboration with GambleAware, SS&A continues to play an important part in breaking down the stigma and misconceptions surrounding gambling support.

By hosting open, approachable, and educational events, the club helps normalise conversations about responsible gaming, showing patrons that seeking help isn’t a sign of weakness, but a positive step toward balance and wellbeing.

This partnership ensures that both staff and guests are empowered with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to make informed decisions, helping to remove the social and emotional barriers that often prevent people from reaching out for assistance.
